If you want anything, you know you can find it on Ebay. There are millions of worth while items out there waiting to be bid on. But sometimes people misspell items that you really want and nobody is able to bid on them because no one can find them. Check this website out: http://www.typobuddy.com/. Just type in a word and it searches items that have been misspelled so there are only a couple of people bidding for that item instead of the whole world. Translation, this is the place to be to get the best deal on ebay. Try it out. Its worth a look.

I love a great paragraph, and the main part of a good paragraph is great grammar. So when this story popped up on CNN, I knew I had to share it with my readers:

When it comes to marking up historic signs, good grammar is a bad defense. Two self-styled vigilantes against typos who defaced a more than 60-year-old, hand-painted sign at Grand Canyon National Park were sentenced to probation and banned from national parks for a year.

Jeff Deck and Benjamin Herson pleaded guilty August 11 for the damage done March 28 at the park's Desert View Watchtower. The sign was made by Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter, the architect who designed the rustic 1930s watchtower and other Grand Canyon-area landmarks.

Deck and Herson, both 28, toured the United States this spring, wiping out errors on government and private signs. They were interviewed by NPR and the Chicago Tribune, which called them "a pair of Kerouacs armed with Sharpies and erasers and righteous indignation."

An affidavit by National Park Service agent Christopher A. Smith said investigators learned of the vandalism from an Internet site operated by Deck on behalf of the Typo Eradication Advancement League.

Authorities said a diary written by Deck reported that while visiting the watchtower, he and Herson "discovered a hand-rendered sign inside that, I regret to report, contained a few errors."

The fiberboard sign has yellow lettering with a black background. Deck wrote that they used a marker to cover an erroneous apostrophe, put the apostrophe in its proper place with correction fluid and added a comma.

The misspelled word "emense" was not fixed, Deck wrote, because "I was reluctant to disfigure the sign any further. ... Still, I think I shall be haunted by that perversity, emense, in my train-whistle-blighted dreams tonight."

Deck and Herson pleaded guilty to conspiracy to vandalize government property.

They were sentenced to a year's probation, during which they cannot enter any national park or modify any public signs. They were also ordered to pay $3,035 to repair the watchtower sign.

The TEAL Web site now has only this message: "Statement on the signage of our National Parks and public lands to come."

I guess sometimes good intentions don't make something just.

My friends know me pretty well. This morning two friends sent me links to news stories they thought I would enjoy.

Sarah sent me a story about two men who were placed on probation, banned from national parks for a year, and must pay restitution for "defacing" signs. Were these men spray painting signs? Drawing crude pictures of genitalia? Writing racial slurs? No; they were correcting typos. One of the men runs a site on behalf of the Typo Eradication Advancement League (TEAL). How have I never heard of this league? Anyway, whether or not these men were really "defacing" property depends, I suppose, on your definition of the word "deface" (were they decreasing the value or legibility of the signs?), your knowledge of the English language (did the signs actually have typos? If so, were the typos corrected?), and your sense of aesthetics (were the corrections noticeable or offensive in some way?). Dictionary.com defines "deface" as follows:

deface

-verb (used with object), -faced, -facing

1. to mar the surface or appearance of; disfigure: to deface a wall by writing on it

2. to efface, obliterate, or injure the surface of, as to make illegible or invalid: to deface a bond

You could really get into semantics here. Did they "mar" the surface of the signs? Did they make the signs "illegible or invalid"? I guess that depends on the successful use of their method of correction (a permanent marker and a white-out substance). If they crudely corrected the sign, I suppose it can be argued that the signs were marred. However, if the change was subtly incorporated into the signs, and if the changes did in fact correct typographical errors, it could be argued that the signs were actually improved! They were providing a free service. :) So maybe I'm a little biased (I correct sign errors myself). I understand that the signs were not the property of these men and that they therefore did not have the right to alter them. However, I don't think I'd use the word "deface," with its negative connotations and implications of destruction. The men must pay to "fix" the signs. In other words, they must pay to have the signs returned to an incorrect state.

When I come across hand-corrected signs it brightens my day. (Yes, I've previously admitted that I'm a huge nerd.) It gives me a bit more faith that language is important to at least one other person out there. I'm the first to admit that I make grammatical and spelling mistakes. Everyone does. However, I am bothered much more than the average person by such mistakes. When Micky and I drive to work we pass a salon called "Professional Nail Care." We've driven by this salon at least fifty times. Ever since I can remember, this salon had a huge hanging sign outside that said "PROFFESSIONAL NAIL CARE." Under this sign was a smaller sign on the door. This one said "Professional Nail Care." It drove me crazy that "professional" was misspelled on the huge sign. I wasn't just annoyed, though. I was curious. Did the salon owner and employees simply not notice that a word in the name of the business was not spelled correctly? Did the sign maker not notice? Had any customers mentioned the mistake? Maybe the owner was aware of the mistake but was keeping the sign in place until a replacement could be made. I wondered about it every time we drove by. A few times I wanted to take a picture but I never seemed to have my camera with me on days when we drove by the sign. I even considered going inside the salon and mentioning the mistake, but doing so might have crossed the line or nerdiness for me. (Clearly the line of nerdiness for me is waaaaaay out there.) About a week ago we drove by the sign and it had been corrected! I was happy that the spelling mistake was fixed, although I must admit disappointment at not taking a picture of the old sign.

I'm slightly amused that these men are now considered criminals. I'll have to be extra careful in my future sign-correcting activities.

Today was the first day of my last year of Highschool. And I don't really know how I feel about it. Like, I'm happy that I don't have to bear through this awful summer anymore. But I don't really know if I want to see everyone again. Whatever; it's not like I have much of a choice.

I got my Dresden Dolls sheet music book today ("The Virginia Companion"). And I couldn't be happier. It's so much fun to play. Quite possibly one of the best moments of this entire year so far. Not the, but close. I've looked at it so much that the pages are already falling out.

I found out that my website is getting over 100 users every day. It's quite exciting how fast we're growing. I just checked, we have 8,246 users.

My parents have agreed to get me a desktop computer, cause I need a new one so bad. I've already picked out two, it's just a matter of my parents deciding how much they'll spend.

Today on my way from KMart (school supplies. I spend $47 freaking dollars on like NOTHING.), I saw one of those huge message signs with a typo. I would have taken a picture, but the light changed. It said, "New Traffic PattUrn." I called my dad and told him to get it fixed stat. Haha it was driving me nuts.

I need a job badly. If anyone hears of a local (Parma && Surrounding areas) job that I'd fit in, give me a call. Something with computers would be perfect. Beyond perfect. I don't care if I'm using them or fixing them. I'd love to be a freelance photographer or a freelance pianist, but at 17, nobody would hire me. Hell, if you hear of any of those being needed, call me for that too. Anything you think I'm good at. =D

I think that's all I have to say. I've forgotten by now.

Michael and I just got back from browsing our local Borders. There was a four-book series in the discount cookbook section and I caught the error immediately. If you don't see it, then you, my dear friend, need to visit the Grammar Girl's site. Real quick like.

I flipped each book over and the title is correct (losing the "are" in the title). No, I didn't buy it---for many, many reasons: 1) we already have a gazillion cookbooks, 2) I'm still doing the vegetarian thing (gave up chicken and turkey two months ago; beef almost 20 years ago), and 3) even though it was only $2.99 (a bargain for a hard cover cookbook), I simply can't bring myself to put something like that on my bookshelves. I think it was a British publication---the price printed on the back was in pounds.

I just noticed the type in the circle at the top left---"This book just makes you wanna cook."

No. This book just makes me wanna weep.

As my father, the Grammar Guru, says....so many errors, so little time to correct them all.

Oh. One more thing. This book cover photo is courtesy of Michael's camera in his new iPhone 3G. What an marvel that thing is! He e-mailed the photo to me while we were in line to check out. How's that for service?

Like many Americans these past two weeks, I have been caught up in a Olympic whirlwind. The 2008 ver

Like many Americans these past two weeks, I have been caught up in a Olympic whirlwind. The 2008 version has so many intriguing stories with amazing plots and miracle-filled sub plots. We saw Michael Phelps become Olympic god by destroying world records. We awed in Team USA's (the men's basketballl edition) throttle of would-be medal contenders. We cheered for the US Gymnast duo of Liukin and Johnson while they overcame angst, horrific scoring from the judges and potential letdown to eventually put their names in the record books. Some ongoing stories are the dominance of both men's and women's beach volley ball and the resurgence of US track and field (with some dissapointment-Tyson Gay and Bernard Lagat).

The Olympic coverage is a little biased though especially if you watch the NBC broadcasts. I know it's an American station and I know it's all about ratings but why can't they show some other, non- gold medal favored american sports. The answer is obvious, and I already answered it but I wished it wasn't the way it is. Don't get me wrong though, I love NBC's overall portrayal of the Olympics. They put together compelling broadcasts with interesting side stories and charismatic interviews. Ehh, can't have it both ways I guess...

...until I found out about CBUT, channel 99 if you have Comcast. This is the Canadian channel that also broadcasts the Olympics. Thus being Canadian they show Canadian gold medal favored sports. It's the same idea as NBC but at least it's not monolopized by American athletes. You get a new variety of sports to watch that aren't shown on NBC. Another cool thing is that CBUT is based in Vancouver BC so their broadcasts are live for the the west coast. NBC is live for the east coast but, again for ratings, chooses to air it on the west coast during our prime time causing a 3 hour delay, which sucks. I forgot to mention NBC has two TV affiliates broadcasting the olympics as well: USA Network and MSNBC. To further my Olympic binge I I watch all four channels daily and read articles from ESPN and NBC's site. While reading about how Nastia got jipped out of a gold medal the other day I noticed some typos in the article. You can see it in the screenshot below where the misspelled words are boxed in red. Upon reading that typo-filled article I have not only lost faith in NBC's olympic coverage but no longer believe in the goodwill and competition of the games. Just kidding, I like NBC. They have since fixed the article. It can be found with corrections at http://www.nbcolympics.com/gymnastics/news/newsid=230935.html#tough+math
